WINDY DROPS ONE

Saturday 1sts vs. Edenbridge, 1st May (Wisdom Cup)

Another year, another cup run, another first round exit.

Lee

Not quite as slow as usual – i.e. a run an over. 29 solid runs but not really enough in a run chase. Used extra large gut to effect when selected as a ‘death’ bowler by the skipper – extraordinary decision. Should not have had to bowl though (see S Miller). Three wickets later, everyone, including the oppo, were scratching their heads.

Barker Snr

Looked threatening, for about 20 minutes. Then bowled. Grumbled in champion fashion at slip, especially while early carnage was taking place. Three catches off Boycs at gully of all places, plus a share of a run out. Catches should have been unnecessary (see S Miller). Surprisingly quiet, given that son was not bowling.

Muzza

Returning from being an exhibit in an African big game park, and moved in the field as if had been on a diet of wildebeest for a year. Avoided a duck to great consternation, despite predictable big swing and miss at first delivery. Bowled at death, but shouldn’t have had to (see S Miller)

Vorster

Expensive bowling, but 2 late wickets added some compensation. Got off the mark with a single, and was then called for a second by Boycs. Everyone knew Zim had injured his ankle apart from his blind partner. Zim is run out by a distance. (He always wants to see S Miller).

Fuller, R

“I love spinners, me” says Bob as he walks to the wicket. Luckily for him, they’ve put the piemen on for a little while, and he tucks in while hogging the strike where possible. Good job he did, smashing 78, including a couple of maximums. Put his success with the bat down to Jeanette and her ‘Babylons”. Should have made early breakthrough of their opener who made a ton, but failed (see S Miller).

C Threader

Fairly tidy early bowling, like his hair. Amazing failed to run out any partners this week. Should have bowled at more lower order batsmen (see S Miller).

S Miller

Uninteresting bowling stint and batting performance. However, single-handedly threw away our obvious Cup chances by spilling dolly at mid off  - their opener. He was on about 20 at the time, and went on to make 107.

K Moorman

Umpired as often as he could – did 2 separate stints. Classical first ball shot, but they didn’t play fair and moved 8 players to the leg side for his second delivery. Would not have had to make as many runs in the chase if a catch had been taken (see S Miller).

G Ireland

Far too much Arsenal-based celebration and smugness for most team-mates. Moved with customary aplomb in the field, and we wish he had been at mid-off when the crucial chance went into the air. He wouldn’t have had to move for it (see S Miller). Nifty 7 runs in fruitless run chase.

White, B

One steady catch as his bionic knees continued to creak. Nabbed another useful 0 not out for his stats, but let the whole team down by placing the wrong man at mid off at a crucial stage in the match (see S Miller).

White, A

Thankfully avoided ball at all stages in the field, whether was at gully or mid-on. Maybe he would have broken his catching duck under pressure, unlike others (see S Miller).

Edenbridge 199-8 off 40 overs

(Cox 107 - was dropped – see S Miller)

(Lee 3-19)

Staplefield 172-8 off 40 overs

(Bob Fuller 78)

Edenbridge won by 27 runs
